An echocardiogram is a non-invasive ultrasound test that provides detailed images of the heart’s structure and function. It plays a central role in diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of cardiac conditions, including valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, heart failure and congenital abnormalities. Echocardiography also helps evaluate symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations and fatigue. At Prime Cardiology we use a high quality echocardiography system with advanced imaging capabilities, including 3D echocardiography and myocardial strain analysis. These tools allow more precise assessment of cardiac function and earlier detection of subtle abnormalities, supporting accurate diagnosis and tailored management.

What an echocardiogram can assess

  • Valve function, including narrowing or leaking, and the cause of a murmur
  • The ejection fraction, the key measure of how well the heart pumps
  • The size of the heart chambers and thickness of the heart muscle
  • Signs of heart failure, cardiomyopathy or previous damage
  • Early, subtle changes in function detected through strain analysis

Is this test right for you

An echocardiogram is often recommended when there is a murmur, breathlessness, suspected heart failure, palpitations, or a need to assess the heart before or during treatment. It is painless, uses no radiation, and gives your cardiologist a clear real-time view of your heart, which makes it one of the most useful tests in cardiology.

What to expect

You lie on your side while a sonographer moves a small probe with gel across your chest. It is painless and usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. No preparation is needed and you can return to normal activity immediately.

Echocardiography is indicated for murmurs, suspected valvular disease, heart failure assessment, cardiomyopathy, and evaluation of dyspnoea, chest pain or palpitations. Advanced 3D and strain imaging support earlier detection of dysfunction. Studies are reported by a subspecialty imaging cardiologist, and where deeper tissue characterisation is required a cardiac MRI can be advised.
